WORE HIS UNIFORM
EX-SCOUTMASTER FINED. AUCKLAND, May 7. The. trouble caused by an ex-Scout-master, D. J. McFanane, was described by the police at the Magistrates Court this morning when this young man appeared on a charge of unlii'.ivfnlly wearing his Scout’s uniform].. Siib-Inspector McCarthy said McFarfeme has previously been a Scoutmaster, but his warrant of appointment had been cancelled in December last. After it bad been withdrawn defendant insisted on parading in his unifeitnn, and by doing so had given the .Boy Scout authorities much trouble. This resulted in extreme measures having to be taken agan.st him. He was liable to a heavy fine or imprisonment for the offence. Had he acted reasonably no action would have Been taken. McF.aiiane: 1 did not wear a badge on the uniform., so 1 consider I was not wearing the Boy Scout uniform. Mr {Hunt pointed out to him that the Act under which lie was prosecuted stated that anything that resembled a uniform was a uniform. Defendant bad no right to wear it even without a badge!. McFatlane added that he was never told not/ to wear Ihe uniform. The minister and committee of New Lynn Troop asked him to take charge ol .that trot);?. '■ ?;V :• Sub-Inspector McCarthy ‘produced a inumber of letters, copies of which, he said, bad been sent: to defendant warning btvm. “There has been a good deal of dimension over the. whole matter,” he» said, “and as; a result of the trouble defendant has given, two troops have been broken up.” Assistant Scout Commissioner Boswell said foie warrant had been cancelled last December. Defendant was warned not*, to wear the uniform as he had not wight to do so.” “Well, I’m? warning you about wearing the uniform now.” said Mr Hunt to McFarlane. “Don’t wear it again. Now take m3’ advice. You are fined £1 and £2 9<w costs.”'
