DRAINAGE PROPOSALS

HAMILTON, May 9:’

The Minister of Lands to-day made an extensive tour of .the Woodlands swamp area of 57,000 acres, close to Hamilton.

With a view to considering ,a comprehensive drainage scheme, Government drainage engineers surveyed the region in 1924 and strongly recommended its development at a cost of £152,090. There are about 34,000 acres undeveloped. The Minister was accompanied on. the tour by Mr Macmorran, Chief Drainage Engineer, local Members of. Parliament, and representatives of local bodies and commercial organisations.

A conference as held at Gordonton, all the speakers supporting the -scheme, according -to -the Government report against which previously there had been determined opposition.

Mr Young, M.P. asked Mr Forb.es:. “Would the Government undertake the necessary legislation?” Mr Forbes was non-committal on this point, but promised the fullest support necessary. Local bodies considered the scheme one of nations importance in connection with closer settlement and increasing production. Regarding ’financial assistance he must consult the Minister of Finance.
