(Received this day at 10.36. n.ni.l SYDNEY. April 18.
Negotiations for a settlement of the coal dispute resulted in a deadlock. The broach is now as wide .as ever.
' The ,conference of parties called by the Prime Minister and -Mr Bavin which has been held for several days, under tlie chairmanship of Sir Wallace Bruce, of Adelaide, discussed tho cost of production, wage reduction, and the elimination Of pin pricks, whereafter the miners’ delegates submitted a proposal to tlie owners’ delegates who unanimously rejected them. The proposals required the ro-opening of the mines on the original basis, an investigation of the owners’ hooks and provision by the owners of a shilling per ton on the selling price of coal towards a fund for the alleviation of northern miners not re-absorbed in this industry.
The owners counter proposals, which were rejected, insisted that the cost of production be reduced by some form of wage reduction and a discontinuance of the evil arising from the virtual control of tlie mines by tlie Unions.
