While the steamer Calm was making her way from Lyttelton to Mailington through a heavy fog on Saturday morning a large albatross crashed into the rigging and fell to the deck. An inquiry concerning the ignition of gas, which occurred in the Dobson Mine on Friday evening, was held nl'ter an inspection had been made by the of Mines (Mr C. J-

Strongman) and representatives of the management and the miners. The following conclusion was reached:— •‘That an issue of gas from the floor was ignited by a spark irom an electric battery caused by the making and breaking of a contact between tie* cable wires and the battery. Samples of the gas were taken for analysis, it being demonstrated that it is much more active than gas usually met with under similar conditions.”

Mr A. I). Ivitto and party, of AVanganui, brought out to Pembroke four fine heads Irom the Matukituki Valley on Saturday. The trophies are undoubtedly the best so far secured in the Wanaka district. The heads, are of 13, 15, 16, and 18 points respectively, and all are heavy in the bone, of good spread, and shapely.

At the meeting of the Westland

' and Board yesterday afternoon some dissatisfaction was expressed by members at their again having to adjourn the whole of the applications • referred at last meeting to the AVarden for report, no reports at all having been received, and the numerous applications affected therefore had to be further delayed for a month before they could he dealt with.

Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., while in the north lately waited on various Ministers regarding several Westland matters, and received promises that the matters would be looked into. Some of the Ministers intimated their intention to visit Westland following the Faster holidays, and Mr O’Brien is now pressing for an early fulfilment of the promises. It is the intention of .Mr O’Brien to visit the far south of Westland before the session.

“While ranging the upper reaches of the ltangitikei River, I was amazed at the number and variety ot native birds to he seen,” stated- Ranger T. Andrews,- in a report to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. “M e, camped by a block of bush with an occasional totara. The bellbirds were literally in their thousands. White-heads, Riflemen Uron, and white-eye were also very numerous. Tomtits were in fair numbers, and an occasional pied fantail was to -he seen. Tuis were there, hut were not plentiful. The harrier hawk, the sparrow' hawk, and another hawk that was strange to me was observed. This strange hawk was smaller than the harrier and appeared to have no fear, allowing me to approach within four or five yards of it. Two knka put in an appearance about dusk, but they were the only ones seen. At night woodliens. and morepork were to he heard on all sides and appeared to lie very numerous.
