Air Daly in-pie 11 ay, the Engineer responsible for tunnels under London, the ,Severn and the Birth of P truth, interviewed. said that many uiircsponsihie statements published had created the opinion that a Channel Tunnel could be constructed easily, hut until those responsible had worked out definite plans, the public should not assume that the work can he done even at a reasonable cost. He said: “Aly view of the Channel Tunnel is that, like most tunnel propositions, it is a gamble. There is no real knowledge of the thickness of the grey chalk except at either end of the tunnel. The tunnel would lie DIO feet behov the. sea, impossible to apply compressed air in which men could work. Stil! the problem can he solved il handled in the right way.”
