There was excitement in the crowded court when Goddard went into the witness box and gave evidence. Ho received ,£'5,0(10 profits between 1918 and 10.3, hut the profits were smaller since, only £2OO a year. Twenty-four hundred ol the money found in the safe deposit belonging to Silbermaii. He explained he ran stalls at Wembley for the sale ol "Wembley rock from which he made a profit ol £3,00(1 in 1924 and £ISOO in 1925. Counsel: Have you ever received money as bribes from Airs Aleyrick or from Ribuffi.

Goddard replied: “Emphatically no.” He added that the notes traced having -nine trom Airs .Mevrick must have been changed for him by some members of her Club. An emphatic denial was made of false reports in relation to any night clubs. He declared lie did not stoop sufficiently low to warn lulls of impending raids as stated by Wilkin.

Questioned regarding AA ilkins’ statement that lie had handed over monies, he replied it was untrue. He uas astounded at W ilk.ins’s evidence. 'The case was adjourned.

The - Goddard case was resumed

Chief liisneetor Cooper gave evidence that Goddard called at Scotland A'ard. When confronted with the tact that his safe deposits were suspected, and asked to accompany the police to bring the'contents to Scotland A'ard. Goddard was staggered momentarl>\ and said:—“l am done for.”. When the notes were being counted, Goddard said:—“l shall give no trouble and shall pleaded guilty. 1 would rather go to penal servitude than say anything. Although I could I don’t want to disgrace the service.” The police traced the notes, some to Ribuffi and some to Airs Aleyrck. Inspector Cooper added that between two and three hundred live pound notes were traced to about fifty people, apart from tlio*o present. The case lor the prosecution has ended.
