THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
The Sydney Ghajt Scandal.
All who believe firmly in the principle of democratic government will regret to learn that the Royal Commission which has been investigating charges of briltery and corruption in connection with the municipal administration of Sydney had pronounced a decisive verdict of guilty on several serious charges. Those implicated hnvo been conspicuous figures in the public life of the city, and heavy civic responsibilities have been entrusted to their care. That they have so far failed iu their duty is indeed lamentable. But ~-e whole incident may serve to remind us that neither corruption nor virtue in high places has ever yet been monopolised bv any political party, and that it needs a strong sense of personal and moral responsibility to prevent men from resisting such temptations as public office so often entails. —Auckland “Star.”
