ROMANCE OF TAILOR’S DAUGHTER

BERLIN, October 4

'Flic cx-Countcss Fi sell Ur von Treuberg, forincry known at Baden-Baden and Monte Carlo as “Pussic” Uhl, was attacked last night at her flat in the YY r est End of Berlin by a man who passes under a, false name of the Count von Arnim. She was severely wounded by three shots from a revolver.

The ex-countess is a daughter of a provineal tailor, and at the end of last century her beauty, her wit, and her ahii ty to discover kind men who would help a poor girl to improve her mind, brought her wealth and luxury. After gaining experience at Fran k-fort-on-Main she made a dazzling appearance at Baden-Baden when that town was one of the most fashionable places in Europe. From Baden-Baden ‘Tussle” floated to Monte Carlo, where she helped ft number of most distinguished persons to make ducks and drakes of their money. £1,250 FOR A TITLE. Soon after the beginning of this ccnlurv “Pussic” went from Monte Carlo to Berlin and took the city by storm. Thinking it would lie nice to be a countess, she married Count I ischler von Troll berg in London, but neglected to pay him the stipulated fee of £1,2.50 for his name and title-—which was just as well, because the marriage was subsequently declared invalid by the German Courts. As her beauty waned she acted as agent for persons prepared to advance money to young officers of the Guards “on easy terms,” and her association with swindlers of this sort ended with a. sentence of imprisonment for 3i years. BOXER GUARD SHOT. After tho war she formed companies for running gambling tables at German watering-places', and received considerable sums which she declared were needed for bribing the authorities. “Pussie” Uhl is now 58, and it is stated that she finds it difficult to keep her head above water. It was only a month ago that she made the acquaintance of the man who shot her. Sho was so much afraid of him that she employed a young sailor, who is also a boxer, to defend her when the other man announced that he would visit her last night. The boxer was shot down as well as his employer, and is now in hospital. Both are, however, expected to recover. The ex-countess resolutely refuses to betray the assailant, who calls himself Count von Arnim, and cannot be persuaded to say who he really is.
