GREAT SOUTH ROAD
SURVEY BEING PUT IN HAND,
It is very satisfactory to learn in confirmation of earlier statements made by this paper that in accordance with the promise made to Mr Seddon last month, the survey for the extension of the Great South Road beyond AVeheka. is to be put in hand at once. Air J. B. Rowntree, of the Public Works staff, arrived at Greymouth yesterday for instructions in regard to undertaking the work, and we learn on reliable authority that no time is to be loot, in regarding to the preliminary work. Referring to the undertaking, last night’s Grey Star said:—llie Public Works Department lias in band the extension of the Great South Road between the Fox and Karangarua rivers. The preliminary work to investigate the best location for the road, will commence in a few days, when a survey party, in charge of Air J. B. Rowntree, will proceed to South Westland. The location of suitable bridge sites will not be the lejjsjp important part of the work to be carried out. A portion of the road has already been laid out, and will bo utilised as far as possible in the pro- v sent scheme. A reconnaisance survey was made some time ago by the staff of the Lands Department, and this wiU, probably bo the basis for the permanent lino now to be laid down as the adopted route.
