'Following a light shower in the morning, the weather was dull for the match England v. Squtli Australia today. The attendance was eight thousand. The wicket, was easy and practically was not affected by the rain.
Hobbs and Sutcliffe # were the opening batsmen. They showed respect for the South Australian attack, playing quiet, hut interesting cricket. They took; the! snore to! seventy-eight by lunch time. The runs mostly were obtained by Sutcliffe, who was the more aggressive.
After a quiet, slow innings of 83 minutes, Hohlxs was bowled in the last over before lunch.
England’s position became worse on the resumption,’ when Tyldesley fell for 15, through taking Grimmett clieaply. ■' Then Sutcliffe, whose batting had been delightfully free and masterful, played Whitfield on to his wicket. Sutcliffe. made 76 runs in one hundred and four minutes.
The Englishmen’s showing was on the whole not impressive against the South Australian attack, which did not appear to be dangerous. Light showers caused an adjournment for a few minutes before tea.
Attractive cricket was played by Hammond and Mead, whose placing was excellent Hammond was brilliant. Mead and Hammond both scored freely, punching the bowling in-all directions, and picking holes in the. field. After his early success in dismissing Tyldesley (frimmett was ineffective, l>oth batsmen facing him confidently. Mead, however, gave a chance off Wall when he was 27. ■
Applause greeted Hammond’s arrival at 80, at which figure he became he top scorer. His partnership greatly improved England’s position, 100 runs being added in 73 minutes. Hammond’s aggression brought him to the century in 127 minutes. The batsmen had assumed a mastery over the attack, which, at the best, was only mediocre. After a partnership yielding 154 runs Mead was dismissed by Grimmett, who took a. brilliant catch off his own bowling just before the drawing of stumps. Scores : ENGLAND—Ist. Innings.
