DUBLIN, Oct. 26
Desmond Fitzgerald, in the Dai I Eireanu, ‘ announced the formation of a new volunteer force for the Irish Free State. The Regular Free State Army, he .said, 'which formerly was 50.(X)0 strong, and at present is 10,000 strong will be cut down to five thousand men.
BETTING INCREASE.
REMARKABLE IN BRITAIN,
LONDON, Oct. 26
An increase in betting in Britain is revealed in the announeemnt that a West End firm of bookmakers has requested the Post Office to provide, within six weeks, private exclusive telephone lines to sixty-eight towns in England and Wales. The Post Office for this is charging one hundred thousand sterling yearly, payable in advance. This is the largest single order ever placed here.
AN INHUMAN MOTHER. (Received this day at 9.25. a.m.) ! LONDON, October 26. Martha Serivens was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment at Nuneaton for neglecting her children, aged eight and four. She went to Bianburv Fair and letft them foodless and without fire, until late at night, and sold the elder for half a pint of beer to a caravan dweller and tried to give the youngest away.
ZIONISM. CAPETOWN, Oct, 25. ’Non-Jew leaders of South African thought and culture, headed by General Smuts, Colonel Cress well (Labour Leader), Dr Roos, .the Administrators, and the Anglican Bishops, have issued a declaration of sympathy with the Jewish national aspirations, and of readiness to assist in realisation of the ideals of Zionism. A BUTCHER, PROSECUTED. LONDON, Oct. 26
The New Zealand Meat Producers Board successfuly prosecuted a butcher of Ashton under-Lynu, for selling ■South American meat as New Zealand. Tire Bench issued a severe warning against this practice, and awarded the Board thirty guineas costs.
THE BANDIT DIES. COLOGNE, Oct. 26. Heidger died in the hospital where he took the last sacraments.
