WANAKA NOTES

(From a Correspondent). All Fowler’s naturalists exploring party will again make Makar ora their headquarters for their activities next season.

Torrential rain, hurricanes .and floods have been the order of the week. Heavy casualties are reported amongst the lambs Tbe rivers have been in high flood for over a week, completely isolating Alt. Albert district. Tbe telephone was also washed away, plus several washouts at Makarora. Two men ha-vo been marooned at Alt. Albert wharf for four days without food. Makarora wharf and sheds are under water, ail so many acres of lowlying pastures at the Head. Over twelve inches of rain fell inside a week, over four inches in one day. The peculiarity of Saturday’s downpour was the distinct clay colour, which was further evidenced on the snow on the mountain tops, by a coating of clay substances. Messrs Fred Freeman and Eric James (Wanaka) have- been entrusted with the blocking of* the Lake Districts red deer country. The latter has also been appointed ranger in that district, which adjoins Westland and Otago districts. The headquarters of the White Star Tourist Services, Ltd., are to be transferred from Christchurch to Wellington. A booking office is also to be established in that city.

An interesting deer stalking narrative appears in tho October issue of the “Fishing and Shooting Gazette,” describing the district. Cattle buyers hound -for >Okurti have been held up at Makarora for days. A definite co-operative policy between the . .Wanaka- .Motors,- Wanaka launch services and horse service for the concentrating on tourist traffic development over the Haast Pass to AVestland has been announced. Extensions to the Irving’s Tourist Hostelry at Alakarora are to be put underway shortly. Queenstown Progressive League are taking stens to have the .Hollyford track filmed. James’ Tourist Service are extending their connection in this direction. The first riding club to be formed in New Zealand was formed last week at Avrowtnwn 1 and is known as the AVakatipu Riding .Glib.
