Arrangements are in hand to hold the annual meeting of the AVostlaml Racing Club next Friday night, when the future of the Club will he considered.

The gas cooking demonstration' will be held as usual at the Soldiers’ Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Airs Heinz will prepare a special hill of fare for the occasion.

The box plan for Tuesday night's second Demonstration Concert at the Princess Theatre is now open to the public. A large attendance is assured, there being an excellent programme set down. The ladies and juveniles from Boss will he among the performers.

Much interest is being taken in the future operations of the Terrace Gold Dredging Co., Ltd., which has acquired the whole of the interests of the New

Hiver Gold Dredging Co., at Dungnnville. The new company was registered last week at Auckland, the chairman of directors being Air H. B. AVilliams. of Hawke’s Bay. During the past six months the area has been furtheV prospected with very satisfactory results. Owing to the heavy nature of the ground it was found that the dredge used by the former company was quite inadequate for the purpose. The new company has ordered modern manganese steel dredging machinery, costing £IO,OOO. The main shipment of plant left England on August 3rd, and is due to he transhipped at Wellington about September loth. The plant includes the latest type of bucket line with tumblers and ladder. It is expected to have the reconstruction of the plant completed and the dredge in operation about the

middle of next November. ATr Gordon AlcKay, of Greyinouth, lias been appointed general manager of the company. The dredge will be driven by electricity from the Grey Power Board’s supply. i

In reference to the destruction of shags, the Department of Internal Affairs makes the following comment: “Owing to damage done to the fisheries by shags, the payment of a royalty at the rate of 2s (id per head for shags killed in the Rotorua and Taupo districts was continued, and a total of 748 shags were thus paid for. There has been a good deal of comment in various quarters as to whether the shag is quite as bad as he >is painted, it being argued in some directions that lie is possibly of assistance to fisheries. But there would not appear to be much doubt that as far as the thermal district. at all events, is concerned, he would not be missed if he were to be entirely exterminated, as, among other things, the bird is known to be the intermediate host of the wireworm.”
