C.O.D. SYSTEM. WELLINGTON, July 12.

A request from the Advisory Committee of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union for an extension of the cash-on-deilvery system in inland deliveries has not met with the approval of the Postmaster-General.

Gazetted to-night are regulations prohibiting the importation of the following goods from the Commonwealth of Australia, save with the consent ot the Minister of Customs:

From the States of Queensland and Western Australia:— Oats, barley, maize (including maize ground or crushed, but not otherwise manufactured), hay, straw and chaff. And further, save with the consent ot the Minister of Agriculture the importation from, any State in the Commonwealth, other than Queensland and Western Australia, of oats, barley, maize (including maize ground or crushed, hut not otherwise manufactured), hay, straw and chaff.

'I ne . following Orders-in-Gouncil dealing with importation of goods from the United States arid the Commonwealth are removed:—March 4th. 1924; July 30th. 1924; December Bth. 1924; August 30th. 1926; October 22nd 1926.

FILMING THE HAAST PASS,

•MAKAR,OA, July 13

Mr Donald MacGregor, cinematographer, of Dunedin, returned last evening from a tour of the. Hnast Pass and country beyond and some excellent scenes have been staged. The weather shortened the visit. The tour was arranged hv the White Star Services Ltd.

WOMAN KILLED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. Elizabeth Ester Bowman, married, a resident near Rangiora. was killed this evening in a collision between a motor car and a horse and cart. The car. which was driven by the husband of deceased,, met in a. head on collision' with a trap driven by Ellis Walters, a lad.

One shaft of tho car penetrated the windscreen of the car and struck Mrs Bowman on tho chest, entering ■ th~ right breast. Death was almost instantaneous.

CHARGED WITH THEFT

ELTHAM, July 13

At the Eltham Court to-day, before Mr J. D. S. Harley, Hector Henderson, ex-Man,ager of Newton King’s Ltd Branch at Kaponga, and James Harold Adam, ex-Clerk, were charged on remand with the theft of monies, tho property of tho firm.

In the case of Henderson, there were seventeen charges, the total amount involved being £1174 6s sd, while in the case of Adam, there were seven charges involving £440 17s. There were also three charges of making false entries against both accused. Lengthy evidence was taken and a statement by Henderson, admitting the theft of £1043 12s was put in by the detective.

■Council for accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved his defence.

Both were committed for trial at the sitting of the New Plymouth Supreme Court on August l'4th., bail being allowed as previously.

TRAVELLER’S SUDDEN DEATH DUNEDIN, July 13.

George Cooper, commercial traveller, aged 48, with a wife and grown up family, was taken suddenly ill at his residence, 131 Frederick Street, last evening, his condition necessitating his removal at 4.50 this morning to tho hospital, where he died four hours later. An inquest was held this afternoon before Mr H. W. Rundle, S.M., as Coroner, when evidence of identification was given by his son, and the inquiry was adjourned until a date to he fixed, pending a post mortem on the body.

PAPAROA MINE RE-OPENED. GREYMOUTH, July 14. The Papnroa mine, recently closed, has been re-opened hv a co-operative party of thirteen men, who are producing coal for the company at a contract price.
