They were Waltzer (fourth favourite—won), Tinbkoa (tenth .favourite—won), and Bea.u Cavalier (eight favourite also won). A pretty useful trio, you would j say, but “list to what bef el.”'. Hori was not pleased with the way M altzei went up to the starting post and decided to .back Taka rung,a< instead. Tak-a-run ga was unplaced. Ho determined to stick to Tinokoa, but a friend told him that Queen Arch (second favourite couldn’t lose, so lie backed the mare and she did lose. After watching the next two races' through his tears, lie had still enough money for the Beau Cavalier bet, but lie thought the house looked' too much of an ohtsider to have a chance, and he plunged on the fav(Xrissoek! —-ituffMctod!). That emptied Hpri’s pockets, and a systematic search failed to produce a single shilling, The luckless hacker’s fingers closed upon his railway ticket. The story goes that he drew it out, regarded it long and earnestly, and then tore it up. “Now,” said Hori to hintself, “walk home, von idiot!”
