RACING CONFERENCE
vßy Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, July 13,
At tho Racing Conference to-day, TV. E. Bidwcll presided in the absence of Sir George Clifford indisposed. O. S. Wilkins was appointed to the Board of Trustees Accident Fund, in place of Sir E. Mitchellson, resigned.
An application from Hector Gray for tho removal of his life suspension was declined.
Similar applications hv L. H. Wynyard and TV. Burnett were “received.”
The report of the Conference Committee said the.Totalisator investments still showed a shrinkage, hut if rumour was correct there had been no diminution in the turnover by bookmakers, the activities of whom were still in the strongest evidence. The closing time of totalisators might be , much more rigorously adhered to. Owing to the heavy and seemingly undue taxation, Clubs were still suffering financially n.nd it would appear, that many of the country clubs would shortly he out of commission. This was a subject that required tho. serious attention of both Conference and Government. The amalgamation of some of the smaller clubs might relieve the situation to some extent and incidentally improve racing.
The Conference decided not to permit broadcasting of races from courses. The Chief Racecourse Inspector said broadcasting tended to create an interest which led to betting in places and under circumstances which were forbidden by law.
