According to present indications the work of electrifying the railway line between Christchurch and Lyttelton should be completed some time before the end of the year. The last of the equipment is expected to come to hand about . July 20, and the electric locomotives are due to arrive in October. The work in the tunnel, with the exception of the actual wiring, will be completed next week, having been carried out well up to schedule time. The wiring in the tunnel will not be done until the very last owing to the trouble likely to ho experienced with the smoke from the steam locomotives. No difficulties of an unforeseen character have been encountered in connection with any of the work, the boring, and erection of brackets in the tunnel having given less trouble than was at first anticipated.

In most of the main departments at the weekly stock sale at Addington on Wednesday the entries were small. The exception was in the case of fat cattle. The entry in this section numbered over 600 head, and, as a result of the larger yarding, prices cased on late rates. However, considering the size of the entry, the sale was a good cine. In the fat sheep section the biumber of wethers forward was larger than has been the caso at recent sales, and they were inclined to be easier but fat ewes sold fully as well as they did last week. Very few fat lambs were penned. The quality was not too good and they did not make such good prices as at the previous sale, though full schedule rates were maintained. A small entry of store sheep met with an active demand, wetlier hoggets and good class ewes selling at an advance of Is 6d a. head on late rates. Store wethers sold firmly at late values. There was a good demand for store cattle, though the bulk of the entry consisted of cows, which sold much hotter than has been the case at recent sales. Dairy cattle and vealers were both yarded _in small numbers, and they sold under keen competition. Fat pigs met with a good demand, and there Was also satisfactory competition for store .pigs, especially the larger sorts.
