“ The sport of trotting continues to suffer from anomalies which exist in the present law,” said Mr H. F. Nicholl in his presidential address to the New Zealand Trotting Conference at Wellington yesterday. “Some of these are absurd, and some are harmful. 'I he ban upon the publication of dividends does not prevent people from obtaining this information, and in many cases the drawing power of the news is used to foster illegal betting. Such measures, being both absurd and abortive, breed an antagonism to the law, arising from a sense of injustice, which is dangerous to the law-respecting spirit.”
In connection with the proposed visit of New Zealand members of Parliament to Canada, under the auspices of the Empire-Parliamentary Association, the following statement was issued last night by Air Forbes, leader of the Nationalist Party:—“Owing to the near approach of the general olction, and the important issues before the country at the present time, it is considered highly inadvisable that any member of the National Party should be absent from the Dominion during the present session or during the election period, and we can only express our great regret that we are unable to take advantage of the generous invitation extended to the Dominion by the Canadian Government.”

The Princess Theatre last evening held a very appreciative audionce when Heuglian the actor-singer and lps select company appeared for a one night season. In addition to a magnificent voice and a. delightful personality Heugliaii possesses the power of creating atmosphere. He has the gift, all to rarely seen, of creating a setting that is simply perfect for the thing lie does. His is a big voice, a musical voice, a soft and gentle voice, a winsome voice, a lilting laughing voice, or it is stern, sorrowful, pi coding, triumphant, hopeless, reverent. Tt is anything he wishes to make it. and at all times it reaches the heart and commands a response. All that is high praise for an artist. Yet there is no doubt that all who had the pleasure of. hearing him will agree that it is well merited. As associate arttists he is fortunate in having Miss Maud Bo", the famous English ’cellist who came with a fine reputation secured in London, Paris, Berlin and most of the capital cities in Europe, and Miss Glad vs Saver, a pianist of remarkable ability. The whole programme given was a very fine one and was .greatly -appreciated !>y tlio please* audience.
