The identity of the hitherto anonymous donor who recently presented tlie nation with the famous and historically valuable Macpherson collection of naval prints, which lie purchased for £109,000, has now been revealed as Sir James Caird, the wellknown shipowner. Tlie collection contains in engravings, hooks and paintings a record of Britain’s naval history from the fifteenth century, and comprises 12,000 items.

Sir James Caird also contributed £65,000 towards tho restoration of Nelson’s flagship, H.M.S. Victory, and £15,000 for the restoration of H.M.S. Implacable, a battleship of the same period.

General Sir Philip Walhouse Clietwoilo has been appointed Chief of thp General Staff in India in succession to Lieutenant-General Sir Andrews Skene. General Sir Philip Chetwode was Commander-in-Chief, Aldershot Command, from 1923 to 1927. He served through the Burma Hills campaign, in the Boer AVnr, and in tlie European AVar from 1914 to 1918.
