FOREMAN’S REPORT. From Foreman as follows: I beg to report the following work was carried out during the month: The footpath in Davie Street between Hampden and Stafford Streets was levelled and gravelled for a distance of about five chains, the surplus spoil • being carted to Rolleston Street drain ■ near Gibson’s Quay. Rea ley Street ' drain collapsed in two places which was repaired. This section of drain is very rotten, and requires concrete pipes. This part is between Weld Street and Gibson Quay. The growth was cut along Miss Ward’s boundary half a chain wide, and in upper Weld Street on both the street; also a portion of Davie Street between Stafford and Hampden Streets. The track leading up to tho reservoir from the road was cleared of gorsc and blackberries. One chain of four-inch earthenware pipes' were laid across Bealey Street, connecting the pavilion oh Cass Square. The old pipes in the well at Lloyd’s corner were taken out and replaced with new ones. Two trips were made along tho pipe line during (he month on account of a hurst pipe and collar. A water connection was attended to in North Rovell Street at McGregor’s old shop. Tar sealing was carried out nil the footpath in Wold Street near Newmans Garage. This was not altogether satisfactory on account of the poor quality of the tar used. A start was made in Sowell Street with Reatnix, of which a quantity arrived. It is too early to report on the results of the article, but it sct'ins to he satisfactory. A" uqmher of leaks was attended to in vhTtdus parts of the town. The witter in tlie reservoir averaged Gft. lOins. for the month. —Received. Air Evans drew attentontidu to the necessity for attention being given to several street corners, where motor traffic was cutting away the road corners and making them dangerous ; also asking for some small attention to several footpaths. A general discussion followed which included sonic comment on the tar-scal-ing in Sewell Street recently carried out. Mr Hecnan urged that the whole' width of the street he tar-sealed. Mr Armstrong mentioned that this was not done because of tho early necessity of cutting it up again along the route of the Sewell Street drain. The question of barring traffic over newly tarred streets was voiced, it being stated considerable damage had lieen done by motor traffic and it was resolved the Foreman lake necessary action. Mr Dull' moved that the tar-scaling work be pushed on, the Chairman of Public Works to he empowered to put on extra men if necessary. Seconded by Mr Jeffries and carried. The Town Clerk reported that 1,000 gallons of tar mixture had been shipped and should arrive at any time now. Mr Jeffries asked that the Town Clerk take stops to mitigate tlie nuisance from the upstairs hand room caused each meeting niglit of late. TOWN CLERK. The Mayor by notice of motion moved that the standing orders lie suspended to allow of the ''appointment of the Acting Town Clerk, Mr G. Coles, as Town Clerk at a salary of £2(10 per aimuiii. Seconded by Mr Jeffries and carried. Mr Coles also was appointed Borough Returning Officer under a similar motion. Air Coles'thanked tlie Council for their vote, accepting it as a motion of confidence, which, lie assured them, would never he misplaced. The Council rose at 8.39 p.m.
