G KRAI AX SCIENTISTS ARRIVE IN

’1 o carry out a two years* geophysical oxploration ol the AVaipatiki petroleum held, about 1.5 miles south-east of Dannovirke, has brought three German mining engineers—Messrs E. Hein. X. Alordriniak, and E. Walliseh—to New Zealand. These three scientists are members of the Elliot Research Corporation, a German-Austi iaii concern condin ting scientific subterranean explorations in all parts of the world. 'I he present is the first occasion on which such an expedition has visited the Southern Hemisphere. They arrived at Wellington by the .Manuka to day. and next week they will he joined by l)r. Rudolf Krulimann, Professor of Applied Geology at Berlin University.

Over three tons of instruments of a highly technical nature, which will he used in the work of exploration, have been brought hy tin* group. Diploma Engineer Alordriniak is the leader ol the expert group, while Dr Krahmnmi will advise the group as geologist and also represent the Cstssel Science Council. which checks and investigates al Elliot Eield measurements, and then compiles the ultimate survey report and lixes the actual boring sites. Dr Krahiiianii is a reputed authority on geophysical research and he lias pub lislied a number of standard works on ibis modern mining science. The mem hers of the party who have already arrived in the Domini.in are young me; ranging from 20 to 30 years of age. and are very hopeful of success. The Waipatiki petroleum field wir surveyed geologically and partially developed before the war by the Kotuku Oilfields Syndicate. Ltd., of Loudon, hut German interests had to abandon it when hostilities commenced. The areas at AVaipatiki controlled by the Goal-Oil Co. (X.Z.). Ltd., were chosen hy Dr. Joint Wanner, the eminent petroleum geologist of Bonn University, Germany, in preference to any other
