AMUSEMENTS.

EVERYBODYS’ PICTURES •EXIT SMILING ” TO-NIGHT. When s|>enking of motion pictures, one may pardonably misquote Shakespeare and say that suhlety is the soul of wit. Gone are the days of slap-stick popularity. " Exit Smiling,” the new picture at the Princess Theatre this (Wednesday) evening is typical of the latest phase ot screen comedy. Its star, Beatrice l.ilhc. is also a distinctly new anil original tvpe of comedienne. Mi ss Lillie, who in private life is the wife of Sir Robert Peel, a distinguished English peer, is a prominent London and Continental stage comedienne. Her first screen appearance proves her to he one of the most delightful artistes in years. Miss Lillie is comical because she Is clever. A llirk of her eyebrow brings a laugh like magic. Every subtle suggestion induces spontaneous mirth. "Exit Smiling” is almost.a play within a play. It is a story of a travelling di: malic company playing their Parsome melodramas in apathetic hackcountry towns, the actors doubling fei each other in a most incongruous ;ii;nor, and all the time seeing a tense little drama ol human hearts work out. its destiny. Miss Lillie makes a masterly study of the pathetically humourous drudge. It is an extremely diliieulL part to portray, yet this new star makes her exit smiliiig«'ind triumphant, •lack Piekford acts with his customary skill and polish in the main masculine role. Other players are Do Witt Jennings. Doris Llovd, Harry Myers, and Tenon Holtz.
