VALEDICTORY.

A very pleasing function took place at St. Alary’s Club Rooms last evening when the parishioners of St. Alary’s and the friends of Airs T. Heenan, gathered to hid her farewell oil the eve of her departure from Hokitika. Despite the unfavourable weather there was a big crowd present, and the arrangements went off successfully. The proceedings opened with a short euchre tournament and after a keen contest " the winners were Airs J. Cameron and Air R. Scott. A musical programme iollowecL Recitations were given by Alisses N. Wormington, AI. AlcGavin, and Alaster P„ AlcGavin; songs by Aliss Al. Hanralian and Air T. Hatch, and a pianoforte solo by Aliss G. Jacobs. Aliss A. Daly acted as accompanist. Rev. Father McKay, in the absence of Rev. Father Finnerty, then spoke. He briefly stated the object of the gathering and on behalf of those present and himself wished Airs Heenan every happiness and success. He referred to her many sterling qualities, and in church work her ready response to do all that was asked of her. On v behalf of the parishioners he asked Airs Heenan’s acceptance of a substantial cheque, and with it the best wishes of a wide circle of friends.

Air G. AYormington replied on Airs Hcenan’s behalf, and thanked all for their kind gift. He assured them that she would always remember the manv friends she was leaving behind her in St. Alarv’s. A dainty supper was then served, after which dancing was indulged in. The music was supplied by Alisses A. Daly, G. Jacobs and L. Dale. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.
