(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) RETIRING AGE OF CIVIL SERVANTS. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 28. At the Chambers of Commerce Conference to-day, a remit was carried as follows: “That this conference is ol opinion that the compulsory retirement of all civil servants on their completion of forty years’ service is not in the interests of the Dominion. It therefore considers that the Superannuation Act snould he amended to allow for longer service where advisable.”

i YOUNG MAN’S SUICIDE, i GISBORNE. Oct. 28. This evening a married, man, named John Andrew Simile, thirty years of age was found dead, lying besides a 1 gas stove in the kitchen at his home. A gas pipe in the range had been taken oil’ and deceased apparently stood over ! it and inhaled the gas prior to death. Simile appeared to be in good health and in the best of spirits. AA'IIITE BA ITERS PROSECUTED. DUNEDIN, Get. 28. Leslie Crossan, Richard Crossan. John Hardy. Duncan Mcßae. Gordon .Mcßae, Donald Cameron and Benjamin Overton to-day pleaded not guilty to a charge of using a set net lor catching whitebait at the inieri -Mouth. Constable Southgate described the nets. He admitted that he himself had been under the impression that no o(fence had been committed, so far as the class of net was concerned. Witness was sure that the deleiidauts had acted honestly.

The Magistrate pointed out that a minimum penalty of CI was provided for, and suggested that the charges against Leslie Crossan, Hardy and the Masßne’s be withdrawn. Inspector Pollett agreed to this, stating that the object of the prosecution was to stop the practice in which defendants had beerf indulging. Cameron, whose case was regarded as a flagrant one, was lined 29s with costs IDs, the Magistrate warning all the defendants against committing any breach of the Act.
