OVER FIVE HUNDRED RUNS
/ Australian & N.Z. Cabk Association.)
SYDNEY, Oct. 28. The weather was fine, but dull, when the New Zealand cricketers commenced their match against New South Males to-day on the Cricket Ground. The wicket was in good condition. The attendance in tlie afternoon was three thousand. Ivippnx won the toss, and he elected to hat, sending in Gregory and Phillips, while .Mc.Girr and Henderson opened the New Zealand attack. After ten minutes’ play, Henderson secured Phillips’ wicket with a ball which swung in, the hoard then leading one for 10.
Andrews joined Gregory, and after a slow opening, Gregory commenced to force. Lowry then replaced McGirr with Merritt, but the change had little effect.
Lowry made frequent howling changes, but both of the batsmen continued to score merrily, despite excellent fielding, Gregory stepping forward to hit Merritt hard. Andrews was more cautious, but be hit hard at anything that looked likely. Gregory had a narrow escape in the early stages, Dempster throwing himself full length at a catch, but the hall struck his hand. Gregory and Andrews went on playing judiciously, mixing hard hits with stolen singles.
At lunch the hoard showed 192 runs for one wicket. Gregory took 101 minutes to reach the century. The batsmen continued to give a bright display, and the score mounted rapidly. Merritt was particularly expensive. Gregory score the first six hit of the match off him. AVlien the total was 250, Andrews brought up bis century for 11!) minutes’ batting.
Gregory had three narrow escapes in succession of being caught. Then Lowry stumped him. The partnership bad yielded 202 runs in 125 minutes. Gregory hit two sixes and 20 fours, and lie batted for 13-5 minutes.
Andrews and Kippax kept the Belli moving till Andrews reached 134. Then Henderson clean howled him, the board reading 329 runs for three wickets. Andrews hit eighteen fours, and he was in for 1 18 minutes, giving nil attractive all-round display. Kippax was joined by Jackson, and the batsmen found nothing in the bowling to trouble them. They put on 100 runs in 30 minutes, Jackson’s chopping strokes being particularly effective.
The New Zealand fielding became slack as the afternoon progressed. A quarter of ail hour alter the tea adjournment, when the total was 505, Jackson succumbed to McGirr, after the fourth wicket had added 170 runs ill 72 minutes. Jackson’s was the most enterprising innings of the day. As lie approached the century, Kippax became very cautious, and be ultimately reached bis goal, after being 125 minutes at tlie crease. Shortly afterwards he skied a ball, which was accepted by .McGirr. Kippax bail batted for 133 minutes, and the total now was 553 for 7.
