RANFURLY SHIELD. PALMERSTON NORTH, August 31. In one of the most severe thunderstorms which has visited Palmerston North for many years, and on a ground which, ns a result, soon became worse than was the Athletic Park on the occasion of the historical All BlackSpringbok test in 1921, Manawhenua to-day defeated Taranaki by nine points to three, thus retaining the RanfurVy Shield. A crowd, which must have been near the ten thousand mark, and keyed to a high pitch of enthusiasm witnessed the match, do spite heavy rain. LEAGUE T'On'Hit 11. AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. Last night’s meeting of the Auckland Rugby League decided it was. unable to’ play Buller, but to assist the West Tkinst League in the expenses of the Buller players taking part in the combined game at Greymouth, also to invite Buller to play in Auckland early in 1928. FOOTBALLERS ARRIVE. -4 LONDON, Aug. 31. The AVaratali Rugby footballers arrived at Plymouth, and were officially welcomed by Admiral Royds and members of the International Rugby Board, representing England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Royds said they were looking forward to learn much from the New I South Wales exposition of the game and hoped the visitors would find the Home countries had maintained the high standard of efficiency and cleanness and true amateurism. On landing the toam was welcomed by the Mayor of Plymouth. Manager Wallace, interviewed said all were well (but they were unable to do any Rugby training, but kept fit by exercises. The voyage was one of the happiest except for a few days of sickness at the beginning.
