FOOTBALL

COAST DEFEAT GOLDEN BAY. Tho rep match, West Coast v. Golden Bay, drew a fairly large attendance of Rugby enthusiasts to Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, and they were treated to a fast and open game which at times was quite spectacular. The play on the whole, however, was not up to the usual standard of rep football, and was marred to some extent by frequent infringements. The Coast team was superior both in back and forward play, and showed better combination than the visitors. Golden Bay excelled more in tackling, and were responsible for much good individual play. The Jamieson brothers were outstanding among those of the homo team: their brilliant rushes being quite a feature of the game. Bell, Tainui and Freitas also played really good football. Holyoake at times proved a veritable mainstay of the Bay team, and with Sexton and Clarke, played a lion’s share of the contest. Tainui, M. Jamieson and Bell scored tries for the Coast, Bell converting two, and being also successful with a free kick, while F'rcitns added four points with a drop kick. The visitors only scorod one try to the Coast’s three, this being secured by Clarke. Holyoake and Sexton succeeded with free kicks, tho latter also being responsible for a drop kick at goal.

AUCKLAND GRIEVANCE. AUCKLAND, Aug. 3. A letter from tbo New Zealand Rugby Union setting out tlio arrangements for the All Back trials this season gave rise to a good doal of discussion and sharp critcism at the meeting of the Alanagemnt Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union to-niglit. Air A. S. Belcher moved that a strong protest bo sent to the New Zealand Union against its action in not arranging a bigger trial to lie played at Auckland, the only argument that could be adduced against such a step lieing that it was a question of ex])oiise. This, he averred, would be more than compensated for by tlio gate takings. In seconding the motion, Air T. Courtney said “The sooner we get oil our bind legs, the more likely they are to take notice of us in the south.” Air Belcher said the N.Z. Union slapped Auckland in tlio face every opportunity it got. “AVe should let the N.Z. Rugby Union see that we are not going to bo downtrodden in the same way as we have been for years now,” he added.

The Chairman, Air H. Frost, said bo thought arrangements hjd been made for a convenience of travelling. He suggested that as Air E. AfacKenzio, member of the New Zeaand Union and Chairman of the All Black Selection Committee, would be in town the following it would ho a good idea to meet him officially on the subject. The mover and seconder agreed to withdraw the motion in favour of the course suggested by the Chairman. It was then resolved that after the Union had conferred with Alx AfcKenzie. a letter to the New Zealand Union should be drafted.
