The Canterbury Rugby Union decided yesterday evening to write to the New Zealand Rugby Union pointing out the strenuous nature of the All Black trial programme, and suggesting if possible that the final trial match, X.Z. Probables v. Possibles, he eliminated and that a North v. South match lx? substituted. INTER-ISLAND RUGBY MATCH. WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. That the annual North v. South Island 'match should, as in the past, he an actual trial of strength between the two Islands was the view held by the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union to-night. The subject cropped up through a notification from the New Zealand Union that, owing to the early departure of the New Zealand team for South Africa next season, it had been decided that only players who could make the trip to South Africa should bo included in this season’s North v. South match.

The Chairman (Mr J. Pendeville) said ho did not agree with this view. The match between the two Islands should lie an actual trial of Rugby strength, irrespective of whether the players taking part could go to South Africa or not. Besides debarring many players who could not go to Africa, it would be unfair to debar the Maori players of both Islands from taking part in the North v. South game. He moved: “That this Comin itto considers that the North v. South’match should bo an actual trial of strength between the two Islands, and if not, it should be played ns a trial game.” Mr G. F. Jackson seconded the motion.

Mr .1. King said be agreed with the N.Z. Union. The trials to select the

team for South Africa had to he played this season, and, under the circumstances, it would he no use including players who were, not available for the South African tour. Mr R. Murphy held the same view. They wanted all the trials they could get. Mr H. I>. Morgan said there might he a young player who was good enough to get into one of the Island teams tiiis year, and it would be unfair to deprive him of his chance just because lie could not make the trip to South Africa. Mr A. E. Ncilson: That should not weigh against the success of the New Zeal anil team next year. Hr A. J. Griffiths: Tlio N.Z .Union are holding plenty of other trials matches. Tf only players eligible to go to South Africa are allowed to play this season, this year’s North v. South game cannot count in the records. Mr Frendeville’s motion was carried.
