M bile the Duke was proceeding to visit the returned soldiers, the police and military lost control of the crowd outside the entrance to the theatre. Even the plunging police horses were unable to quell the people’s ardour, the Duke’s car being unable to pro- 1 '■cod. Iho Duke sat there for toil minutes while oflorts were made to clear a path across the footpath, hut it "as ol no avail. Eventually the car "iade as though to return to Government House, and proceeded liv a i ircuiious route to the rear entrance of 'ne hall, the Duke being enabled to keep his engagement. The redeeming leature ol the unparalleled episode was that no effort was made actually to mob the car or even mount the running hoard, the police used every devil c in their power, short of batoning the cron(l. hut were completely powerless. The crowd was composed largely ol women and girls, many of whom fainted, and others had to receive hospital treatment.
