PRISON ESCAPEES CAUGHT. AUCKLAND, March 24
Two prisoners made a dash for liberty from Mount Eden Gaol to-day. but they were recaptured within half an hour. They were Charles Henry Augustus Jones and Charles Henry Whitehead. Both men were working in & quarry at the gaol. They eluded the warders' and made a break for some houses in the vicinity. The warders gave chase, and they recaptured both prisoners at the hack of some of the houses. J.P.’S ASSOCIATION'. DUNEDIN, March 24. The annual conference of tlic Justices of the' Peace Asoeiation opened today. The delegates were welcomed by the Mayor. The annual report stated that the membership of the several associations u'a.s 1638. Three new associations were formed during the year. W.C.T.U. AUCKLAND. March 21. The ntimid Convention of the New Zealand W.C.T.U. has opened here with an attendance of 140 delegates. It was reported that then; are now 175 handles of the Union, with a total membership of 7204. Thirty-three new branches have been lormed during the year. The treasurer’s report showed that the credit balances of the different funds totalled £2,156. compared with £2.220 for the previous year. The expenditure was £ll7s'and the receipts £lll2. LINER’S CARGO PILLAGED. AUCKLAND. March 24. It is reported that a great deal of cargo-pillaging -ook place during the vovage of the steamer Middlesex. ] which arrived at Auckland from England on Wednesday. The thefts were discovered at sea, and on the ship’s arrival here, a search was carried out liv the police, who recovered a f|tiaiititv of stolen goods. The pillagers gained an entrance tc Ihe hold through a small hole in the I lazaretto, near the seamen’s quartcis, . and many cases of valuable good- ■ were opened. .Lady’s coats, fa nay I pull-overs, and other articles of eloth- ! ing were taken, and several eases n[ | tobacco and cigarettes were alsc j pillaged. A slip occurred on the Otago Central line between Hindoo and Deep Stream this morning, holding up the train from Dunedin, hearing the Gov-ernor-General, who proceeded from Wingatui by a motor. HOSPITAL LEVY. DUXKDIX. March 24. The Dunedin Hospital float'd decided at a special' meeting last night that the levy on. local authorities for the current year should he fixed in maintenance, approximately £44,000, and capital levy is still £6OOO, the mainten auce levy has increased from £33,000 to £14,000 this year, so that the total levy has been increased by £14,01)0, from £30.000 to £.50.000, the increase working out at oni'y a shade less than 10 per tent.
