’FLU ON U.S.A. AVARSHIP
NEW YORK, March 23.
Four deaths from the influenza epidemic have occurred on the American transport “Chateau Thierry,” which was eu route from New York to China with several Congressmen’s families and five hundred Army recruits.
LOANS FOR. AUSTRALIA. NEW YORK, March 23". Air Pitt, the Victorian Minister, lias arrived here. He said that he wasunable to discuss financial questions at present, since his enquiries had only just begun. He proposes to call upon various banking institutions, and particularly on those which have alrdtdy entered the Australian field.
Arc Pitt said that Victoria would come to the New York market only if loan flotations there could be arranged on more .advantageous terms than in London. Otherwise, loans would unquestionably be made with the latter place. Victorian financing, whether in London or Xew York, would be done through the Australian Loan Council. He said that the observer vras quickly struck with the trend of the American financing market. Vast loans were constantly being made with foreign countries, and American financiers were yet seeking for further outlets for their capital.
The Hon. Air McKell, the Assistant Treasurer of the New South Wales Afiuistry, has also arrived here. During his stay here lie will ialso consult with various banking groups, and be lias already called on some of the bankers.
He said that lie has found that Xew South "Wales 'and Australasian credit, is generally excellent in America.
Asked whether New South Wales contemplated any further flotations on the local market in the immediate future, Air AlcKell said he was unable to discuss this at present.
