Air John Douglas Ritchie, who for the past eighteen years has been Land Purchase Officer and Chairman of the Land Purchase Board, is about to retire on superannuation.. The Alinisfer of Lands announced this afternoon that Air R. A. Rodger, of Tapanui. lias been appointed to succeed Air Ritchie as Land Rtirehase Officer. Air Rodger was a member and Chairman of the Otago Inquiry Board, and later, when the Revaluation Board was set up. under the Dis-_ charged Soldiers’ Settlement Act, lie was given, a place on the Board. A resolution, requesting the Government to appoint an expert committee to discover what effect the stream of immigration has an unemployment and the labour market, was passed at a meeting of the Auckland l nemplovnient Relief Committee to-day. Mr A. Spencer. President ol the Auckland Employers’ Association, presided at the. meeting. The Committee also decided to obtain official figures from the Union Secretaries of the number ol uncmplovod, and to urge local bodies which anticrtile raising loans or who have raised loans, to proceed with reproductive works. Mr Spencer stated that there were 508 men on the Lalkmr Department’s hooks wanting work. Mr E. Phelan (Secretary of the Timber Workers' Union) said that the workers considered thbt the Govern--1 mont should be forced to stop the immigration. and he also stated that it was probable that a demonstration would take place during the Duke ol York's tour, hut ho hoped such ti contingency would not he allowed to happen .
