While Alarconis arc most reticent as to (he reasons lor Australian beams failure to satisfy contract conditions,-* it is learned the trouble is due principally to land lines at both ends, also defective receiving apparatus, which is unable to keep pace with the rapid transmission. Alarconis state both Australian and United Kingdom stations are being completely overhauled. It is further learned from a most reliable quarter that it will probably be three months before the beam will be working. At present there is no indication of the date of tests being resumed, but the Post Office researchers have unshaken faith that a commercial service will ultimately be achieved.

-MYSTERY STORY. LONDON, January 26. The “ Gazette’s ” Rome correspondent states: A manuscript, alleged to be a new Gospel, has been discovered in the township of Ceriguola. Though many are of the opinon that it is worthless, offers to purchase the document are pouring in, including a rumoured bid of four hundred thousand sterling from Air Henry Fold. Tho “ Times’s ” Rome correspondent says:—“ The alleged fifth Gospel discovery is fast developing into a mystery siorv.” The correspondent says that a letter by Signor Gardella to a local newspaper “declaring the Gospel / to be a forgery,” was written in order to arouse a religious controversy on tho nature of Christ, with a view to assisting in the sale of his new romance on the “ life of Christ.” Signor Notua. the owner of the Gospel. adheres to the story that the writer received the document as compensation for services which he rendered “ the Wandering Jew ” upon Aloute Gargano, where tho Archangel Alichael briefly sojourned among' men.

ExKing George has received visits from many Greek friends and notabilities. He refused to make any public pronouncement, but his friends are convinced that he will shortly return to Greece as King, and probably in the spring, if the Premier and AL Zaimis settle the outstanding problems. LONDON, Jan. 26. “The Times” Athens correspondent reports that a plot was recently discovered in naval circles to facilitate the escape of General Pangalos (ex-Dic-tator) from the Averoff Prison. The Government has decided on prompt measures, and is sending General Pangalos back to prison in Crete. PHYSICAL TRAINING. ALVDRTD. Jan. 26. A Government decree lias been published ordering all Spaniards, both men .and women, to undergo physical training. Only persons certified as unfit bv"a doctor will be excused. Every citizen will bo furnished with a card' indicating his or her physeal development, which will be examined every ten days. The order aims, not only at the improvement and conservation of publichealth, but at insuring that every citizen shall be capable of taking part m tho defence of the country.
