NOTED PIONEER DEAD.

BLENHEIM, Jan. 23

The death is recorded of Mr Henry Dunstan Vavasour of Ugbrook station, one of Marlborough’s most highly esteemed citizens. The late Air Vavasour, for about ten days had been confined to his bed. He was born at Hazelwood Castle, in Yorkshire, in the year 1850, and a few days ago ho celebrated his 77th. birthday. GIRL’S FALL. AUCKLAND, January 23. CYCLE SPORTS. MASTERTON. January 23. Glorious weather prevailed for the Alastertoii Club’s sports meeting on Saturday, a feature of which was the appearance of Lamb, the Australian cyclist. The visitor displayed great ability, and appeared to handle the turning track far better than did liuruess on his visit two seasons ago. Great interest centred in Lamb’s contests and T. On key, and in a thrilling finish, he conquered the local rider by two events to one. Lamb was unplaced in his heat of the mile, the final of which was won by T. Oakey in 2ni.in>. lllsecs. The Australian won the 17 miles Invitation Scratch Race by a wheel from T. Hakey. who led into the straight. Harrison (Wellington) was close, up third. The time was 3.15 1-5. In the three miles Harrison from 150 yards, took the lead in the last lap, and won by five yards. Lamb again had the host of T. Oakcy, who was a close up third. his in 4.37. The final saw Oakley reverse the positions on the visitor, the local rider stealing a march and winning liy twelve' yards from Baker, who beat Lamb by a length for second place. The time was 4.49 2-5. There were large fields, necessitating heats in all hut the three miles and tlio scratch race. A large team of Wellington runners gained tnanv successes in the foot and field events.
