WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.

The local branch of the above organisation arranged an invitation social in St. Andrew’s Hall yester-uight for the purpose of extending a welcome to the Dominion President, Mrs T. E. Taylor (Christchurch) who is officially visiting the West Coast). Forty hulies responded to tho invitation and the local President- (Miss Potts) expressed the pleasure of those present in the opportunity to come into personal contact with the leader of the W.C.T.U. in the Dominion. The Mayoress (Mrs G. Perrv) welcomed Mrs Taylor to Hokitika and assured her that the ladies of the town and district greatly appreciated the visit of one who liad been previously known by name as a leader in all women’s movements for good citizenship and healthy lives. Mrs Taylor (who was most heartily received) in responding to the cordial greetings expressed her pleasure at once again visiting Hokitika, having very pleasant recollections of her presence with her late husband hero some 21 years ago. Referring to the ’W.C.T.U. she said that although only 52 years

had elapsed since its inauguration, the movement was now represented in 52 countries and counted a million of women in its ranks. She detailed the various departments of rank which the UllOll endeavoured to carry on, giving special and extended reference to good citizenship, peace and arbitration and prohibition ; and emphasised the necessity for the carrying out of the detail of Parliamentary and civic effort in connection with the work.

During the evening Mrs Nortlierol’t rendered the solo “My Task.” and Miss Knight- “Wondering Why,” both of whom received well merited applause. Four new members were initiated by the Dominion President, and a resolution of, heartiest thanks to the visitor and soloists, proposed by tlie lion. Secretary, Mrs Knowles Smith, concluded a very successful programme.

Thereafter the ladies of the local Union dispensed refreshments, after which the singing of the Doxology terminated a very pleasant evening.
