Hnwken, Minister of Agriculture, states that the Government lias decided to acquire a property in the vicinity of Palmerston North as the site for the proposed Agricultural College for the North Island. LITTLE CHANCE OF SALVAGE. WELLINGTON, July 21. The local agents of the Commonwealth Line, have received cabled advice. from the London office, to Iho effect that the position concerning the Port Kcmbla is worse. The vessel has eighteen feet of water in all but No 1 and 5 holds. Salvage operations are likely to ho somewhat lengthy. Whatever sound cargo remains is in a very precarious position.

WOMAN CHARGED. WELLINGTON, July 21

Elizabeth Ann Ncvill, 49, married, was charged with unlawfully using a certain instrument. Tlio woman, on whom the instrument was allegedly used, died at the hospital this morning. Accused was remanded on £3OO bail, and two sureties of £l5O each, and to report twice daily to tile police.

SEIZURE OF OPIUM. WELLINGTON, July 21

Haran Gopal, Indian fruiterer, who landed at Wellington from the A!lira m a yesterday, pleaded guilty at tlio Magistrate's Court to-day, with being in possession of prohibited goods. When his baggage was searched, the Customs officer found four and a half pounds of solid opium valued 'at £250 in a pillow. A line of £25 was imposed. Vasan Bhilta, similarly charged, was remanded for a day.

HOARDING HOUSE BURNT. DARGAVILLE, July 22

The Aurega House consisting of eleven rooms, n boardinghouse owned by John Barbarich, was destroyed by fire early this morning. The flames had a. good hold when discovered by the Brigade. There was no chance of saving the building and there, was no one living on the premies, which was undergoing alterations. The cause of tlio fire is a mystery, the owner being absent in Auckland. The insurances are, on the building £I4OO, contents £SOO.

BANKRUPT ESTATE. GISBORNE, July 22. The creditors of the bankrupt estate of Robert Kenneth Lcviek decided to place the matter concerning the bankruptcy in the hands of the Crown solicitor. At the previous meeting the bankrupt, a taxi driver, stated that he had received a cheque for £4O and paid it over in liquidation debt. Today he admitted the money had been repaid to him. the explanation being that the money was of more use to him than his creditors.

A PROTEST. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 22

At the annual meetings of the suppliers of the Haw-era and Ox lord lioui* Co-operative Dairy Factories yesterday, resolutions were passed protesting against absolute control. Both factories will pay out for the past season, approximately twenty-one pence, pci pound for butterfat.

At the inquest on the infant twins of Doris and Fry Hollows, found dead in hod at Mosgiel, n verdict of death from asphyxia, the result ol mucuous accumulated in the air passages, was returned.

At the inquest on Aminbelle Cruel flow, married, found dead in her bath at High Cliff, a verdict of asphyxia as a result of drowning was returned.
