MAIN HIGHWAYS
COUNCIL MEETING. The No. 12 Highways District Council met in Greyimnilh last evening, the following members being present:— Messrs If. Watkinson (Chairman). J. Higgins, I). J. Evans and L. Bell. The Chairman reported that Mr Archer had resigned and Mr Powell had been appointed to till the vacancy as representative of the Bullet’ County on the Boat’ll.
The Chairman slated that tlirce objections to the reclassification of roads in the Grey County had been received and the matter was referred to Mr Higgins.
The Main Highways Board intimated their intention of visiting the district about January 20th. It was decided that the host way of arranging matters was for the members of the Council to meet the Board at AVestport and accompany them through the district. The Chairman was empowered to write to the Board and make the necessary arrangements for the carrying out of this proposal. It was decided on the motion of Mr Higgins, seconded by Air Bell to obtain a list of the registered owners of vehicles of two tons anil over, in tlio Council’s district. A letter was received from the Automobile Association requesting the Council to consider erecting a traffic bridge over the ton of the present oonv liined railway and traffic bridge over the Teremakau River. The Chairman said that the suggestion of the Automobile Association was impracticable, and he suggested that Ihe best method of safeguard would he electric warning signals. The Council agreed unanimously that the bridge was extremely dangerous to motorists, hut were unable to see any means of improving the situation. A suggestion was put forward that another set of piles below the present bridge would make it possible to put a traffic wav alongside of I lie railway line. After some discussion it was resolved to endorse the Chairman's suggestion with regard to the electric signals, and to bring the matter before the mem,hers of tho Ron rd when they visited the district in Jnnuarv.
The Chairman announced that he had received advice that a grant had been made by the Government for work on Zala Bridge. The resignation of Miss F. Ashton was received with regret.
