THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Wiiy Giiikhai.ism simui.n I’iikvaii.. The existence of a democratic liberal Party, strongly supported, is the sole guarantee that can be provided in New Zealand against the accession of Labour to office. This is the fact to h.> pondered by Uie constituencies!. Liberalism is the natural creed of the great majority of the people of any young country. Tts first principle is equality of opportunity. In politics as in every other phase of life, action and reaction are equal and opposite Class legislation on one side provokes a reaction to the other extreme, and class legislation on the other side follows inevitably. Liberalism offers tb<' only means of eontiol. the only permanent safeguard against sectional domination and class legislation. The country can get along very well without a Labour Party; it can get along very well without a Conservative Party: but it cannot be a politically peaceful, prosperous and well-govern-ed nation unless it lias a strong Liberal group, powerful enough to demand justice for all sections of the people. —Lyttelton “Times”.
