SOLDIERS’ CLUB AND SOCIAL HALL.
THOUSAND POUND CAMPAIGN. The campaign to raise £IOOO for the Returned Soldiers’ Club and Social Hail to be erected in Sewell St., is being continued this week. The first £2O is now- in lir-nd, and the fund is likely to be augmented considerably during the next fortnight. Saturday next will be the second Soldcirs’ Day. and the depot in Rovell St. will be in charge of Mrs Benjamin and assistants. Gifts of all kinds for sale, especially home cooking, will be welcomed. On Thursday evening the usual weokIv eucliro tournament will ho held at Stow s rooms, and increased accommodation will be provided. Tin* play from this week onward will count, towards the aggregate prize to he given. The ladies’ committee conducting the tournament are nranging to supply refreshments.
The section to be occupied by the fine building to bo erected in Sewell Street for the Returned Soldiers' Club is now well cleared, and arrangements are to he made without delay to put down a concrete foundation, and go on with the building scheme. As soon as the site tan be prepared the Supremo Mall will he moved across, and placed in position to form the liencleus of the enlarged social hall to lx* provided. It is hoped to have the now hall, which will have a floor spue ol more than double that, of the present .Supreme Hall, ready by June nr July. In ihe meantime the foundation for the suite of club-rooms (live in number) will bo laid down, and a contract let for tlie building, which will he of goodly proportions, and have a concrete frontage as soon as sufficient money for the work is in sight. iashionahle benefit half to the build jug fund at the Drill Shed on Empire Day Eve (May 23rd). 'lbis is going to he one of the events of the season. I lie Roval Orchestra has kindly offered to supply the musical programme for the hall free of charge, a generous offer which has hem accepted with thanks. A Minstrel Show is to he organised to he held in June for the benefit of the building fund. Messrs Dolbridge. ForLawn, and S. I*. "Wilson have the matter in hand, and arc holding a meeting immediately to organise the concert party and commence rehearsals.
