Tiie Hokitika public were rather fortunate in hearing the lecture the other evening of tiie corner stones of character. It is a lecture which has been delivered throughout the United States and had a great vogue. It is the sort of matter calculated to make people think, and that after all is the greatest aid to self improvement. The interest aroused by the series of lectures heard last week, we hope will not easily subside. There will be offering immediately the opportunity to maintain such a line of mental improvement. Tiie lectures under the Workers’ Educational Association abiout to be given here will assist in the same direction—helping the people to think. The lecturer the other night suggesed to the audience the advisability of taking up serious reeding. 111 addition to that the spoken word is also useful. If there is to be effect from toe lesson of visiting lecturers, the advice given must be acted upon. The formation of personal character is not difficult where there is the will on the part of the individual. A full regard for right and wrong helps greatly and then comes out the personality—the ability to use the opportunity in the manner suggested by the lecturer. The salvation of the world lies along those fines; for the force and power of a nation comes from the character of the individuals within it. Peace can be pursued always along sane grounds. It is the extreme always that counts for trouble, and creates the difficulties which give rise to all the disaster which follows. A happy and contented people are those where character is soundly laid. To build up character there is the call for reason in all things, and then is attained that high degree of living which assures to the people the blessings of a contented life.

That time flies is brought to mind by the fact that the first annual meeting of the Hokitika Beautifying Association is already at hand and will be held to-morrow evening. It is possible for the Association to do the town great service in the matter of civic improvement, and fo r this reason it is to be hoped the public support already accorded will be not only maintained, but in point of fact enhanced. One way to help to encourage the enthusiastic workers is by attending the annual meeting and taking part in the deliberations. There is so much to do, that any advice which will be helpful in assisting to carry out the self-im- j posed task will be welcomed. Those who enjoy the grounds which are being Improved by the co-operation of the Association, and particularly those as for instance the sports’ clubs, j which use the grounds, .shouli} make

•ft a point of attending. The Association looks for its best assistance from that direction, and useful help can be given from the quarters indicated. Now that the Borough Council is to appoint a caretaker for the squares, the coming year should see a marked improvement in the general appearance of the grounds, and that with the aid of the Beautifying Association many extras will be done which will result in enhanced ornamentation. Cass S'qure is soon to have reared within its grounds, the Westland War Memorial.. FWr this reason alone, the grounds require to be put, particularly the eastern side in more seemly order. Sports meetings, football and hockey, are also approaching and the whole place is in need of attention. For full utility purposes the grounds require constant attention, and the Beautifying Association will be the responsible party to see that this self-imposed task is properly carried out.
