CLAIM FOR £1,500. CHRISTCHURCH, June 10,
Justice Herdraan and a special jury were engaged for the past two days in hearing a claim brought by Henry Burnett Jones against the New Zealand Insurance Coy. for £ISOO, the amount of insurance on the ketch Fanny, which was destroyed by fire m Whsngaroa Harbour, Chatham Islands, in April last. Tho plaintiff claimed that while drying the combustion .chamber, an explosion occurred, resulting in the destruction of the launch, The defence alleged arson which allegation was subsequently withdrawn, and one that plaintiffs method of drying the combustion chamber, was highly dangerous, substituted. It was contended the risk would not have been accepted bad the company known of ils employment. The jury found for the plaintiff, but | judgment was not entered up, pending argument on certain non-suit point
A WELL-KNOWN FOOTBALLER. DUNEDIN, June 14. Fred Given, who died-at Hawera on Sunday from pneumonia, was the wellknown Alhambra, Otago, and New Zealand representative forward. He represented Otago on no fewer than occasions, and toured Australia with t’ All Blacks in 1903. He captained the Alhambra team for a season, and on bis retirement coached them successfully. The deceased, who was married, with two children, was in inspector in the service of the Dunedin Drainage Board, and left here n few years ago to take up a similar position with the Hawera Borough Council.
