THE POINT IN DISPUTE. WELLINGTON, May 1
The point in dispute between the Prime Minister and the loco ;nen is that Mr Massey wanted one clause to read, “that Jf the Commission to bo appointed, decided to make any improvement in wages and conditions retrospective,” lie would accept the rereeorn menda tion.
The loco men requested that the Premier should sign the agreement providing “that any improvement made should date back to Ist April 1019, when the dispute began.” Mr McCarley said; “If accepting another Board of Commission we were going against the wishes of the members who demanded that a full and complete settlement should be effected before they resumed work. We accepted the Commission in order to try to run trains for the reception of the Prince, and for that reason -only; and tile point in dispute means that we asked the Prime Minister to assure us on his signature, that the improvements in wages and conditions would be retrospective to April Ist 1919. The Prime Minister insists that this should he left to the Commission. We have consulted our representatives and they insist that a full and complete signed up settlement shall he effected in file present dispute, which is 12 months old. In fact, the main points are ten years “old.”
