ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION.

WHAT THE OBJECTS ARE. AUSTIIALIAN & N.Z. CAnLE ASSOCIATION] LONDON May 2. Dr John L. Cope, will lend .the expedition about to start for the Antarctic. Dr Cope accompanied the ,1914-17 Antarctic expedition. Tic was surgeon and biologist to the Ross Sea Party, He was a member of the party who ; were left on the Great lee Barrier for. the purpose of laying depots after the Aurora broke her moorings. Dr Cope’s expedition leaves England next month. He has chartered the famous ship Terra Nova for the expedition.

Dr Cope expects to be absent for six years. He will maintain during that time, wireless communication.

There will be 58 men to be divided

into tliree parties, 22 men to go to New Harbour, and two others parties to go within the Antarctic circle, one to Scott Island, and the other to Ross

Island. The Terra Nova returns to Mew Zealand after landing the parties. Next year she visits each of the parties and then sails round the continent or Antarctica. In 1922 she will try to reach Coates Island.

The chief objects of the expedition are:—(l) To ascertain the position and extent of the minora logical and Other economically valuable deposits known to exist in Antarctica, with a view to their development as a source of national wealth; (2) To obtain fur-

ther evidence as to the distribution and migration of whales, with a view to furnishing whales for British industry. (3) To investigate the meteorological and magnetic conditions in the Ross Sea and the chief cape there,; and also those in Enderbcrry-Land. (4) To ascertain the influence of these con. dj'tiions upon (Australasia and South Africa, respectively. That such results will be of great value has been alreadyproved by the 'Argentine station at the-South Orkneys and the. Commonwealth station at Macquarrie .‘lsland. The. expedition takes an aeroplane to facilitate the survey of the interior of the Antarctic Continent.

It is even .contemplated that an air iglit to the. South Pole will be made.
