Andrews, C. S. Howard, T, \Y. Adams, and AA r . AT. Hamilton. On. the recommendation of the Appointment Committee various appointments were confirmed and resignations accepted. The committee’s report continued that a letter had heen received from the Blackball Committee, giving most of the,'information required by the Department before the matter of the proposed District. High School for Blackball could he further considered. II was agreed to obtain the necessary written undertaking from the p;i>'- •

to send their children to the secondary if established, and also to ascertain from the inspectors whether the accommodation suggested by tlie committee_\to.uld be sufficient.

Aloodie (Supervisor) reported: The Department’s Manual and Technical Inspector was visiting Greyinouth while f was there. Tie stated that he had heen sent by the Department as the dan submitted for the proposed Maim il Training Building at Hokitika wa? not. satisfactory. The plan was made nit in accordance with the wishes of Iho Hokitika School • Committee. After •oiisultatiou' with the Committee, the •dan has been amended in accordance vith the wishes of the Department’s Inspector, rb-drawn, and a- frcsli nppli•ation for a grant made out and sent ‘o Wellington.

/ BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The following recommendations' afFecTing AVestland were included in the Building Committee’s report: Letters were received from the JnterAVnnganui School Committee and the Department regarding the procuring of ■'dditional land to enlarge the school ate. Resolved, that Air Grimmond obtain accessary particulars for the Department from the Land Office in Hokitika;

Inspector ATilontine reported that there, is no need for additional accommodation in the school, the committee'at Tutor- AYanganui to he inform’d accordingly. ,

The Department authorised the Board to accent, Mr E. A. Wells’ tender for the purchase of the old school residence and site at Woodstock. Foreman to attend to defective win-dow-sash and gas fittings in laboratory; and tenders to be obtained for lease of sehool reserve of 2.' acres at Hokitika. Bho following recommendations by the Foreman were approved. Roof of sehool at Otira to he tarred and exterior painted, cost £33 10s. New fence to he erected and blackberries cleared at Blue Spur at cost of £5 10s. Blackberries at Stafford to bo orubbed at cost of £8 10s. RETIRING MEMBERS. Lots were drawn to ascertain the members that should retire in view of the election to be held in July next The following are tile retiring members Urban area, Messrs E. H. Andrews, and J. Jamieson : North Ward, Mr Jos firimmond; Middle Ward. Mr W. A. Banks; South Ward. Mr W. M. Hamilton; Timaru Urban area, Mr J. Maze. All of these genetlemon are eligible re-ploetion, but it, is understood that Mr Hamilton will not be a candidate.

SCHOOL BOOIviS. A report was received from the senior inspector, to’ the effect tha* cases had occurred in which teachers both in South Canterbury and Westland had adopted the hooks used by These teachers had acted under the impression that they were justified in such a course, the inspectors having re cognised all books that had been on the old lists of tho old Boards. A letter was also received from the Clandeboye- School Committee, protesting against the continual change of school books as being detrimental to the children and a continual charge on the parents. It was agreed to ask the inspectors to advise teachers that until the Board adopts a list for the whole district they should confine their choice to the hooks on the lists of the respective old Boards in accordance with the procedure laid down by the Department on the amalgamation of tho several Boards.
