The Parliamentary touring party left Wliaugaroi this morning on the next stage of its journey, Calls were made at Kamo Springs and Hikurangi, where the settlers were lavish in their hospitality. An inspection was made of the great Hikurangi Swamp, which it is proposed to drain, the scheme being that the Government should do the main work, charging the owners with the cost. The scheme would bring something lik 30,000 acres into pasture. After leaving Hikurangi part of the party had an experience of northern roads under wet conditions. The first oars got through dry just missing a heavy downpour, which caught the last cars and accompanied them over fiv n ' n ,! eu. Road chains were ta! i <,he wheels in heavy raiu and . j y continued Over clay roads which always were treacherous sad were made worse by the badly

broken emfaco and absence of any attempt at grading. The consequence waa that half the party reached Kawakawa late, and special arrangements had to be made for their- conveyance to Russell, They had the compensation of a brief experience of the difficulties settlers in this district have to endure though of course the settlers do not make their journeys in heavy motor-cars. The firit half of the party reached Russell at 4.30 the second half at eight o’ clock.
