AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

CONTESTS AT NEW PLYMOUTH

: Th«t qualifying rounds for the amateur championships of Taranaki were contested at the Empire Theatre, New Plymouth, last night before a comparatively small crowd of spectators. There were a few defections from the published list of contestants, notably A.. Duggan, the Hawera middle-weight, who was listed to meet L. A. Gilbert for the middle-weight championship,, and R. Fitzsimmons for the heavyweight title. The best bout of theevening was the light-weight contest between D. Loveridge (Huirangi) and G. Cad|man (Hawera). Details of the bouts are: Parser-weight. G. Hawkins (Hawera), 5.1, defeated' W. Perica (Hawera), 5.6, after a very interesting bout, in which both boys; showed a great deal of promise. The concession of over a stone in weight and some inches in reach was too much for R. Brenmuhl (New Plymouth), 4.9, who was defeated by "Tiger" Haskell (Fitzroy), 5.11. Brenmuhl was game and saw the bout out, but Haskell was able to stop almost? all. his leads.

Feather-weight. A contest between W. Coates(Omata), 9.0, and V. Jensen (New Plymouth), 8.10, did not produce" anything^ exciting in the way of boxing, though both men fought hard. Jensen won in the Last three rounds, his chief scoring blow being a left to the jaw, which wa&i delivered almost as if he were undergoing class instruction. j D. Mercer (Hawera), 8.10, fought a; bye with Higgins (New Plymouth"), 9;2 7 to qualify for the feather-weight: filial to-night. Both lads gave a Rre.ttydisplay of boxing. Light-weight. D. Loveridge (Huirangi), 9.9, wras- too< good for G. Cadman (Hawera), 9i12',. the referee awarding the boutt te» Loveridge half way through the" fest round. As an exhibition of boxing it. was one of the best of the evening, both men showing a good knowledge «£ the art. Loveridge is one of-the* prettiest amateurs j Tet seen in New ipivmouth. A. Cadman (Hawera), 10:0; defeated \\. Coombes (Oaonui), 9.4; in- tfe ofc&er light-weight contest. [ Middle-weight* Thanks, to a straight left, J. Willis (New Plymouth), 11.0, defeated V. BroFnan (Fitzroy), 11.4; in th> first middle-weight contest of the- evening. Heavy weight. R. Fitzsimmons, (Piham-*), 12.5£, had J. Tuku (Okato), V 2.2-, twice on the mat in the fjrst; round <jif the light-heavy-weight cliampionship^ only the gcsag saving Tuku. The b<mt, however, w:as awarded to Fitzsitetfwns by the i^eferee calli?.tg- on Tuku, who was obviously don*) for a further effort. The round opened interestingly, Tuki?. being a<i2?essive and' scoring with hiis ieft to the face, bus shortly after Fi.f-e-- { simmons. _ who ha^ been standing $ft", stepped in with a> right swing ta the jaw, which se-ni Tuku down for the count of five. A rapid exchange of blows followed, but Fitzsimmons repeated the dose within a few secoinls, am} T«lv;u again hit the canvas.-r—News.
