NOTES AND COMMENTS.
i (By Maecenas.) Considering the amount of rain that has fallen the Egmont race track stood up to the racing Avell on the opening . day of the meeting. After showing promising form at the Feiidmg meeting, Papaponga again re-A-ealed some pace at Egmont, and was unlucky to meet one like Te Kawa. Sir FaneifuPs leg is still causing a lot of trouble, and in consequence verylittle work can be given the Rokeby geldmg; in fact this useful jumper is liable to break down any moment. On Starland's showing oA^er the Egmont Club's steeplechase course he will have difficulty in negotiating the Ric- ( carton or Trentham courses. : Dick looked better at Egmont than ; at" any other period of his career, and" : if he goes on the right way he should j do well when the "country" is stiff. , San Forte appeared to be short of work when sent out to race on the- ' first day at Egmont, but nevertheless gave a finished display of jumping. ' Marqueteur looked remarkably weU' when saddled up for the MeEae Memorial on Wednesday, and with Bonnetter out of the way the old geldingwould have shown his opponents un in a had light. ' ' . In contrast to the first day of lasir. year's winter meeting, which "wa s very wet, the Egmont Racing* Club werefavoured with an ideal day for this year's fixture. Had the rider of Rational at Egmont allowed that gelding a little more rein a couple of furlongs from home it looks as if he w«uld have beaten Ecuador. Asthings were, Rational was asked to give an impossible start. The black gelding Mort Ay diect" recently. A full brother to that good horse Depredation. Mort Avis gavepromise in his early career, but did not turn out as good as anticipated. What a wonderful finishing run Bonnetter is capable of Droducing. A furlong from the post in the Mcßae Memorial at the Egmont meeting shewas giving Marqueteur a big start, but. over the last few chain s she simplyI new past him. Mr W. E. Adamson, the oldest member of the Egmont Racing Club, and Avho has had an honourable and useful association with that club as a steward and committeeman, is retiring from the management committee of the Egmont Club, but in recognition of his much valuable Avork to that body he will be made patron of the Egmont I Racing Club. I After having A Tery bad luck in each, of her races at Feilding, it looked as if Rehutai Avould meet a similar fate or* the opening day at Egmont, as tho grey filly Avas not at all well placed turning for home, but putting in great work in the run up the straight, Rehutai won easily over the concluding stages. Although someAvhat on the robust sid'i, Eene Avas fancied by her connections, on the opening day of Egmont. but the start she Avas asked to give , the leading division over the last six furlongs Avas an impossible one; still the performance of Eerie was a satisfactory one, as although she covered st, lot of extra ground, she finished better than any of her opponents. i In his races last season First Born j unwed like a stag, but at Egmont on Wednesday this good son of Thurnham; did not fence af all well, but despite'■■ic drawback was just in behind theleading division all the way, and if heis taken up for the Great NorthernHurdles he will cause plenty of trouble- , to his opponents.
