CLOSING OF WAIHI MINE
BEQUEST TO GOVERNMENT
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, May 5. The -stress of unemployment at Waihi caused by the cessation of crushing at ihe Waihi Grand Junction works, was brought before the notice of the Prime Minister and the Minister for Public Wiirks to-day by a deputation headed by Mr. H. Poland. M.P. The deputation -asked that the Government should find employment for as many of the :men as possible, and suggested that if some additional machinery \™s provided forty or fifty men mipi\t be employed on the Waihi-Athenree section of tiihe East Coast railway. It was also urged that various other works in the district should be put hi band.
The Hon. J. G. Coates agreed to do his utmost immediately to find employment for at least eighty men. This wHI give relief to the most necessitous eases where the men have iamilies to support. It is estimated that the number df men rendered idle is about 200. The mattetr is to be referred to the engineer-in^chief of the Public Works Department.
