OBITUARY.

MAORI WAR VETERAN,

ME W. PAYNTES

The death of Mr William Paynter, aged 85, occurred at hia residence, Courtenay street, New Plymouth, last evening. Mr Paynter was one of the early pioneers of the district, having arrived at New Plymouth from Devonshire in the emigrant ship Amelia Thompson, in September, 1841. During the Maori War in the 'sixties, Mr Paynter served with the forces, and fought in the famous engagement at Waireka, the 64th anniversary of which was celebrated on Friday last. Owing to his illness Mr Paynter was unable to attend this year's function, which was the first he* had missed for many years. —

Mr Paynter married a Miss Matthews, the daughter of a pioneer, and was for many years after the war engaged in farming in the Kent road. He took an interest in local body affairs, and at one time was proprietor of the Albert road factory. About fifteen years ago Mr Paynter retired from farming pursuits and has since resided in New Plymouth.

He is survived by his wife, and; a family of four sons and three" daughters. The sons are Messrs William Henry Paynter (Stratford-), Arthur Paynter (New Plymouth), Sydney. Paynter (Stratford), and] Ernest Paynter (Awakino). Another son, Charles, was killed in the Qegarue train disaster on the Main Truiijk line last year. The; daughters are Mesdames.J. E.
