WILL BEAT N.S.W. FOR TEN YEARS.

In congratulating the Victorian XI. on winning the Shield, the chairman struck a high note of optimism by declaring: "I think We shall see in the next Australian XI. more than two Victorian players, and our young players are coming along so well that ■ I think for the, next ten years Victoria will beat New South Wales.'/

Success sometimes intoxicates opinion, and the writer shares the view that just at present Victoria, flushed by its recent victories, is inclined to indulge in romancing a little. The trend of thought in Victoria this season is that Victoria has abundantly proved its superiority over New South Wales*; and that in future Victoria must have greater representation in the Australian XI. It is a proposition which I cannot reconcile "with my judgment, for, leaving aside for. a moment the romance of opinions engendered by great success,- I still think that N.S.W. possesses more cricketers of class tnan Victoria, and that the overthrow of N.S.W. is but a passing cloud. That, too, is the view shared by dozens of disinterested but keen followers of the game in Melbourne. —Sydney Referee.
